The inaugural Ray White Surfers Paradise Muscular Dystrophy Charity Ball was first held in 1993 and was the concept of Andrew and Greg Bell the Directors of The Ray White Surfers Paradise Group.
Their vision was to create an elegant social occasion in which the Gold Coast business and social community could attend and support the little known yet far reaching effects of Muscular Dystrophy.

Muscular Dystrophy is a debilitating disease that affects young children attacking their muscular system breaking it down until ultimately death is caused through either heart or lung failure. Huge strains are placed on family resources and families of these children with special needs for equipment such as beds, wheelchairs and feeding equipment.
The Ray White Surfers Paradise Muscular Dystrophy Charity Ball was designed to direct 50% of the funds raised into research the other 50% to providing the much needed equipment for these financially distressed families.
The Brain Foundation’s national scientific committee will select research projects from the funds raised with the greatest potential from a pool of nationally competitive applications from internationally acknowledged leaders in Muscular Dystrophy Research. This process will attract a Commonwealth Government co-contribution of 75% of what is raised.
Over $2,000,000 has been raised through the 16 previous charity balls which has attracted leading business and sporting identities over the years. The balls have also been attended by Queensland State Premiers.
A cure into Muscular Dystrophy will have much broader benefits as a cure will be found by identifying a process to prevent the defective gene that causes Muscular Dystrophy from being passed on from mother to child. When that process is discovered than all defective genes that cause a number of genetic diseases will also be eradicated.
